Halley's comet is a very bright comet. A comet is an icy body that moves around the sun in a long, oval path. Halley's comet is named for Edmond Halley, an English astronomer. An astronomer is a scientist who studies stars, planets, comets, and other objects in space. Halley showed that comets move around the sun in a set path.
Halley's comet can be seen from Earth about every 76 years. This is when it is closest to the sun. Chinese astronomers were the first to see Halley's comet more than 2,000 years ago.
February 9, 1986, was the last time Halley's comet was seen from Earth. Scientists believe we will see it again in 2061.
