Description : Launched and operated by NASA, Skylab was launched unmanned by Saturn 5 rocket with a mass of 169,750 pounds. Skylab orbited the earth from 1973 to 1979. Commander/Service Module(CSM) used three manned missions to the station between 1973 and 1974. An additional Apollo/Saturn IB stood by for the third mission ready for launch if needed to rescue the crew in orbit. Thousands of photographs of the earth were taken and number of hours spent in orbit were extended. |
